The Shawano County Rural Health Initiative is a non-profit program designed to address growing concerns regarding health care issues facing today's farm families.  At the center of this program is a Rural Health Coordinator who makes free "house" calls to interested farm families to provide health information, education, referrals to area services and, most importantly, lends a trusted ear to listen and keep in confidence concerns and issues these families face today.

The Need
More than 18 percent of Wisconsin dairy farm families have no health insurance.  Another 41 percent have high deductible plans that provide only major medical coverage.  And four out of five lack health insurance that covers checkups and preventative care.
Lack of adequate insurance coupled with self-reliant spirit among farmers have hindered these folks from accessing much-needed health resources.  Many farm families have avoided medical treatment for minor
accidents or various chronic conditions due to cost and perceived lack of need.  Many families as well don't seek preventative care such as blood pressure screenings or annual physicals for themselves or their dependents for the same reason.  Here is where the Rural Health Coordinator can help.
